Lincoln Cathedral
Lincoln cathedral towers 200 feet above the lower City of Lincoln
Lincoln Cathedral from the north west, looking very fine without scaffolding! To the left is the church of St Paul in the Bail, the third church on this site you can read about this and other Lincoln Churches here.
![]() The Dolphins Inn, over 400 years old, was one of a row of buildings blocking the north east view of the Cathedral. Alfred Shuttleworth bought the inn and the other buildings from the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln Cathedral and had them demolished to open up his view of the Cathedral from his home at Eastgate House.
Alfred also had the building on the left hand corner renovated in a half-timbered design. It was known as the Rest and people climbing the hill were able to rest there before continuing their journey. |
![]() Cathedral from the south west. In the middle ground can be seen The Norman House (once known as Aaron the Jews House) on Steep Hill. Photograph taken from the former County Hospital, now Chad Varah house and part of Lincoln University.
View of the Cathedral from the north east. probably taken in the late 1890s after the Dolphins Inn and other buildings were demolished by Alfred Shuttleworth.
Excellent aerial view of Lincoln Cathedral. The Bishop's Palace is in the left foreground
